Capital of Culture?

I’ve just returned from a work trip to Istanbul. I was there two years ago with Mark Thomas working on his book exposing the crimes of Coca Cola.

Whilst I was there I visited Sulukule, the oldest gypsy community in the world and a community facing forced eviction and demolition, the story appeared as eyewitness in the Guardian newspaper.

The Roma residents, famous for their traditional gypsy music, were fighting the ‘gentrification’ of their historic community, which was only to leave a handful of houses as museum artifacts and re-house the gypsies in anonymous blocks some way outside the city.

The community is now dispersed, destroyed and impoverished and as Istanbul celebrates its European Capital of Culture status it represents exactly the opposite in my opinion.

Dale Farm Video – Gypsy Weddings

Dale Farm is the largest traveller site in Britain and is under threat of eviction.
The High Court has ruled in favour of Basildon council and the forced eviction of over a hundred traveller families from the land they own in Essex.

Four couples rushed to marry ahead of the court judgement.
The wedding of Nora Quilligan and Danny Sheridan took place on UN Human Rights Day – December 2008.

Human Rights Day

Irish travellers Nora Quilligan and Danny Sheridan from Dale Farm celebrate their wedding day.

This was the third of four weddings held in quick succession by families at Dale Farm anxious to solemnize marriages before the New Year when Court of Appeal judges may rule that Basildon council can put into action its much delayed eviction operation.

The Reddog Experience

Reddog @ Chats Palace

This year I have visited Roma communities in Istanbul and Rome. Sulukule is a gypsy neighbourhood inhabited by Roma since the 11th Century and faces demolition under plans to gentrify parts of Istanbul.

Roma families living in Italy are facing increased persecution, I travelled to Rome in August to document conditions in the camps. There is also a short documentary available on the Reel News October DVD release and screened at the Foundry this Sunday.

Tdog has put together a slideshow of my images with Roma music and it will be screened at the Reddog event at Chats Palace in Hackney, London on Friday 3rd October 2008.
