International Women’s Day


Monday 8 March is International Women’s Day, it was one hundred years ago in 1910 that the idea was first suggested by German socialist Clara Zetkin. This year TUC are putting on a huge celebration, organised by the pioneers of mixing up ideas and entertainment, Philosophy Football’

Featuring comedy from Josie Long described by The Guardian as ‘ a figurehead for a new way of doing things in alternative comedy’ . The night will open with the soulful vocals o Zena Edwards plus the hip-hop and spoken word duo Poetic Pilgrimage. Introduced by TUC Deputy General Secretary Frances O’Grady with author Bonnie Greer, the show is compered by the brilliantly funny Lorraine Bowen. A visual display of international women’s day will be provided by photographer Jess Hurd.

A Seasonal Night for the Discontented

No Turning Back Christmas Party ’09

Philosophy Football’s 2009 Christmas Party is a seasonal night out of outrageous inspiration. We’ll be mixing up ideas and entertainment for a fantastic event to start the festive break. Friday 18 December featuring a photographic review of the year from Jess Hurd. The lo-fi ukulele jazz of Tricity Vogue and one of the hits of the Edinburgh Festival Blow Up! The Credit Crunch Musical. With a German Oompah Band explaining the crisis of capitalism you just know you’re in for a night out with a difference. The evening opens with an eighties vs noughties poetry slam, 1980s cult leftie alt poet Andy P vs new generation spoken word from Kate Tempest. Plus dancefloor fillers from Melstars: Music and in conversation John Harris, Helena Kennedy Jon Cruddas, Chuka Umunna and others. Presented in association with the campaigns and ideas group Compass. The party is at The Offside Bar & Gallery, 271 City Road London EC1.
